Traditional practice weighs the Moon's condition first, whether it is waxing and whether it is void of course, then the planet that fits the undertaking, and keeps hard aspects from Mars and Saturn away from the planets that matter.
The electional search turns those conditions into rules you choose: planets direct or dignified, the Moon waxing and not void, no hard aspects from chosen planets, and, with a place, benefics angular. Preferences can be weighted so the windows that meet most of them come first. With a person chosen, rules can be set against their birth chart too.
