Zodiacal releasing

A Hellenistic timing method that divides a life into periods, each ruled by a sign, released from the Lot of Spirit or Fortune. Each sign lasts a fixed number of years.

Zodiacal releasing starts from the sign of a lot, usually Spirit, and assigns each sign in order a span of years: Cancer 25, Leo 19, Capricorn 27, Aquarius 30 and so on, taken from the minor years of each sign's ruler. Each span splits into sub-periods using the same numbers at smaller units, down four levels.

When a sub-level would return to the sign it started from, it jumps to the opposite sign instead, a turn called the loosing of the bond. Periods in signs angular to the Lot of Fortune, the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th from it, are marked as peaks.

Aspicio follows Vettius Valens's arithmetic with 360-day years, as reconstructed by modern translators, and releases from either Spirit or Fortune.
